Mastitis

Mastitis is a common problem for newborn mothers. Mastitis occurs when milk production is more than milk needed for breast-feeding. During mastitis, bacteria may enter into the breast through the nipple causing inflammation. Hence, proper breast massage is crucial to prevent such health implications. Best way to prevent common breast mastitis is proper baby breast-feeding.

Breast agglomeration must be treated

When newborn mothers have breast agglomerations, hand massaging is recommended to loosen the agglomeration and more importantly to release trapped breast milk. Massaging methods pulling down towards the nipple followed by breast-feeding is suggested.

Breast-feeding more often during mastitis

Mastitis occurs about 2-3 days after birth when the mother’s nipple hardens and becomes warm. To treat mastitis, mothers should breast feed at least 10 times per day. It is crucial that the baby sucks on the entire areola. The mother needs change her breast-feeding position to facilitate breast milk flow.

Breast-feeding more often when a mother has a crack nipple

The nipple-crack occurs when the baby's mouth does not fully cover the areola. Some children are born with short tongue and some mothers' have larger nipples. In such cases, mothers must make sure that the baby sucks on the entire areola during breast-feeding. The correct position of baby's lower lip should be about 2.5 ~ 3 cm below the nipple.

Do not forcefully use breast-pump to take out breast-milk

Many baby mothers suffer due of mastitis. Mastitis may lead to loss of confidence and motivation, which may lead to reduced milk secretion derived from stress. Although mastitis may cause breast swelling and pain, forced milk secretion through breast-pump is not recommended for it may lead to more serious health damages.
